The Mission of Allister Banks

Allister Banks came into existence after it became clear to Matt Payne (a finance & investing enthusiast, and soon-t0-be author) that financial education for kids needed an overhaul.

Matt had mulled over the idea of writing a finance book for kids for a number of years, but it wasn’t until he had a family and children of his own that it really started to take shape.

Matt felt that the sometimes dry subject of finance needed to be more fun and engaging in order to give kids the desire to learn about personal finance. That’s when he had the idea to write an adventure story (like the ones he loved when he was younger) and sprinkle in some finance learning along the way.

The fruit of this effort was the book, Allister Banks and the Ruby Blade (An Adventure Finance Tale).

Matt’s goal during the creation of this book remains the same today: Give every child access to a fun and practical personal finance education.

What is an Adventure Finance Tale?

An “Adventure Finance Tale” is an exciting story that teaches finance in an engaging way. Kids need this type of fun learning tool when it comes to budgeting, saving, investing, and retirement (in other words, personal finance).

As evidenced by the book, Allister Banks and the Ruby Blade, a story that combines the two awesome worlds of Adventure and Finance can simultaneously entertain young readers and prepare them for the future.

Problems and Solutions for Teaching Kids Finance

While most folks would agree that financial education for kids is a good thing, there are some real problems when it comes to providing this instruction:

  • Personal finance can be a challenge to teach at home—Busy parents do not have a lot of time to teach their kids finance, and even if they did, they may not know what to teach or when they should start teaching it.
  • Not all schools provide kids with financial education—Curriculums are jam-packed with other subjects, and teachers who are stretched thin don’t always have time to tackle a subject like personal finance, despite its importance.
  • Most finance books for kids, in our opinion, don’t get the job done—Many kids books claiming to teach personal finance either don’t provide enough instruction, provide too much, or are too boring.

While the solutions to these problems may seem straightforward (for example, make personal finance more fun and interesting for kids, and easier to teach and learn at home and school), they can be difficult to implement.

That said, Allister Banks and the Ruby Blade (An Adventure Finance Tale) solves these problems. The book itself teaches the basics of personal finance to kids as they eagerly read about Allister’s search for the Ruby Blade. Additionally, parents and teachers can use the book and its website resources (as discussed on the Parents & Teachers page) to help their kids learn the practical finance lessons taught in the book.

Thus, Allister Banks and the Ruby Blade, as well as its website resources, can be a huge help to busy parents and teachers who need a little assistance and direction to effectively teach their kids the important life skill of personal finance.
